Some of the best and most original Halloween costumes are those that are related to current events. Check out these top Halloween costume ideas for 2015.
Left Shark. The star of the 2015 Super Bowl halftime show was not pop diva Katy Perry, but rather her uncoordinated dancer, Left Shark. Dress as this undisputed MVP of Super Bowl XLIX for Halloween by donning a left shark costume available from Amazon. If the official costume is outside of your budget, check out this shark pajama onesie and awkwardly dance your way to receiving the title of “Silliest Costume” at your Halloween party.
Deflategate. The Deflategate scandal began in January 2015 when the Patriots and their poster boy, Tom Brady, were accused of deflating footballs in the AFC Championship. Over the past nine months, Deflategate has generated more sport conspiracy theories since, well, the Spygate cover up. Maybe the Patriots deflated footballs in the AFC title game or maybe they didn’t. Regardless, the Deflategate scandal makes for a 2015 Halloween costume touchdown. For this guise, you will need a Tom Brady jersey, a deflated football hat, and a ball deflator. Haters gonna hate; deflators gonna deflate!
The Dress. In February 2015, a dress that challenged the classification of color became an Internet sensation. Was it white and gold or was it black and blue? Re-spark this debate by going as The Dress for Halloween. The Dress would make for a good duo costume where one wears a white and gold dress and the other wears a black and blue dress. If you want a solo costume, you can spray paint the front or back of a black and blue dress. This costume will be sure to make you the talk of the Halloween party.
Zaughty. March 25, 2015 is a day that One Directioners will remember forever, as Zayn Malik left One Direction to become “a normal 22 year old.” Mmmkay. It was bad enough that Zayn quit the band, but then Zaughty had to happen. What even? Thankfully, Zayn and Naughty Boy had a falling out over the summer, but their brief partnership makes for an original costume idea. All you will need for this costume is a black wig and a t-shirt that says, “Zaughty will rise,” which you can design at Café Press. Don’t forget to make snide remarks about sass master, Louis Tomlinson, throughout the night to stay in character.
“Bad Blood” Video Vixens. In May 2015, Taylor Swift finally debuted her “Bad Blood” music video after weeks of teasing fans with Instagram pictures of celebrity and model cameos, including Selena Gomez, Lena Dunham, and Cindy Crawford. Talk about squad goals! The music video even broke the record for most-watched video in 24 hours on Vevo. So grab your squad and channel your inner femme fatale for Halloween this year. For this group costume, you and your friends will need black pleather attire, fake weapons, and lots of attitude!
Conrad the Dead Raccoon. In the summer of 2015, a dead raccoon on a sidewalk in Toronto went viral after a concerned citizen reported, via Twitter, the lifeless critter to city officials for removal. When no one arrived to dispose of the body, residents of Toronto went into mourning and created a sidewalk vigil, which included a condolence card, flowers, candles, and a donation box. The raccoon, which was named Conrad, began trending on social media with the hashtag #DeadRaccoonTO and people all over the world were able to express their sympathies. Honor Conrad’s memory this Halloween by donning a raccoon costume. To accessorize, carry around a red rose and a large sympathy card for fellow Halloweeners to sign. RIP, sweet Conrad.
Kanye for Prez. At the 2015 VMAs, Kanye West announced during a rambling acceptance speech for the Video Vanguard Award that he was running for president in 2020. Oh that Kanye, always the jokester. Or…maybe not? After the awards show, West told Vanity Fair that he was “definitely” still thinking of running in 2020. Wait, what? This Halloween, be in the running for “Scariest Costume” by going as Kanye for Prez. For this getup, you will need a Kanye mask and an “important sweatshirt” displaying a campaign slogan, which you can design at Café Press. Our favorite Kanye 2020 presidential campaign slogans include:
Yeezus for Preezus in 2020.
Ye We Can.
Bro. Bro! Listen to the kids.
We the millennials, bro.
Pope Francis. Not much was bigger in 2015 (in the U.S. at least) than Pope Francis' historic visit to the United States. Pope Francis proved that he has popularity ratings in the U.S. that would be the envy of any world leader as hundreds of thousands of enthusiastic people lined the streets in Washington D.C., New York, and Philadelphia for a chance to see him. This year, honor Catholic exorcist priests’ wishes to replace Halloween with “Holyween” and dress as a pontiff. Amazon and Spirit Halloween have a variety of pope costumes available. Bonus points if you can ride around in a popemobile, or at least a Fiat 500L, all night.
